Rio Tinto has awarded a $60 million contract to Monadelphous to provide maintenance services on its rail network in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

Monadelphous will conduct general track maintenance, renewal services, and resurfacing services across Rio Tinto’s entire rail network and rail workshop services.

The contract will commence over three packages of work under a three-year contract, with a further two three-year extension options.

Monadelphous managing director Rob Velletri said, “This work will also provide us with the opportunity to strengthen and build on our existing capabilities in the rail sector.”

Monadelphous currently undertakes extensive rail work across the Pilbara region, including mechanical repair, abrasive blasting, cleaning and relining of carbon steel ore wagons and the provision of commissioning services for new ore wagons.

The contract builds on the relationship between Monadelphous and Rio Tinto in the delivery of construction and maintenance services.

Rio Tinto has also awarded Monadelphous a contract worth over $100 million this year to undergo structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation works at its new iron ore facilities, as well as modifications to its existing plant. Monadelphous expects to complete the works in 2021.
