Due to the growth of our business and an expanded portfolio of projects, an exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Technical Director Rail Signalling to join our team.

As part of the Transport and Resources team, this role covers a broad range of skills relating to signal engineering design. The primary focus of this role is to contribute to developing the signal engineering design services of our business as well as to lead and support the preparation of complex signalling designs.

As a successful candidate for this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
• Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent and/or Diploma in Railway Signalling or similar area;
• Have experience with the Victorian rail network.
• Extensive experience of the MTM and V/Line signalling design and standards.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Victorian signalling standards, design processes and procedures.
• Extensive experience in the following aspects of Signalling design:

- High level scheme and control tables design, checking and verification;
- Bonding plan design, checking and verification;
- Various interlocking (relay, SSI/Smartlock, Westrace etc.) circuits and data design and verification.


Extensive experience of the ARTC signalling design and standards is desirable
• Hold Level 2 and Level 3 competencies from relevant AROs, and in particular MTM, that allow you to carryout essential design, checking and verification activities needed for the delivery of complex rail infrastructure works.
• Extensive knowledge of Victorian signalling principles
• Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership;
• Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines – and Arup’s related procedures including OH&S
• Ability to communicate with people at all levels in both technical and non-technical environments;
• Effective written communication and report writing skills. In particular the ability to communicate with other professionals about signalling to a non signalling audience.
• A detailed knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of different signal interlocking technologies and how these technologies can best be integrated into the network.
• A detailed knowledge of different train control technologies, namely CBTC, conventional signalling and ETCS.
• Ability to maintain personal effectiveness particularly during periods of higher than normal workload;
• Ability to remain positively motivated and foster team spirit at times of significant pressure, including assisting others to meet deadlines;
• Desire to excel;


About the role:
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners and other specialists and reporting to the Signalling Team Lead, this role’s primarily focus is on new and upgrade rail projects in Melbourne and Victoria however will also likely include work both regionally and internationally.
The role’s major responsibilities include:
• Provision of expert technical design inputs at a senior level in generating innovative and cost-effective solutions for clients, to the clients’ expectation and satisfaction. You will seek solutions which
- maximise benefit to the client, with a particular focus on delivery cost or whole of life cost as appropriate.
- minimise Arup’s delivery costs
- maximise ongoing opportunities for Arup
• Complete designs and carry out formal checking and verification duties across a range of complex signalling technologies that are currently used by MTM, V/Line and other relevant AROs assets.
• Ability to work within the design and design review frameworks as set out by relevant AROs and adopted by multi-disciplinary delivery projects.
• Work collaboratively with a range of external stakeholders, such as MTM and V/Line SMEs, to identify problems, offer innovative solutions and generally overcome challenges to ultimately deliver a set of designs that will be acceptable for the network operators.
• As a member of a design team, typically multi-disciplinary in nature, provide technical inputs, that understand the competing interests of other non-signalling disciplines and work with other designers to develop solutions that ultimately align with the goals of the project.
• Provision of advice to clients in an articulate and informative manner.
• Building strong client relationship
• Support the development of junior staff either in the form of formal design mentorship, or informal technical advice.
• Ensuring consistent completion of projects across the rail sector within quality, budget and programme expectation.
• Providing expert technical support throughout the lifecycle of signalling projects from concept to detailed design and testing and commissioning stages.
• Ability to provide signalling inputs to tenders/estimates.
• Ability to produce high level; concept designs providing the optimum solution to the clients.
