About the team

The Infrastructure and Place division is charged with the delivery of an ambitious and once-in-a generation program of public infrastructure works. We are developing and delivering smart, integrated and sustainable infrastructure and places that are valued by our customers and communities.

Sydney Technical Services provides specialised engineering services for the multi-modal delivery, operations and management of our Transport network. We are the centre of technical expertise driving innovation and best practice.

The opportunity

The primary purpose of role will be to lead the provision of specialist electrical engineering services as well as influencing the leadership and strategic direction of large-scale complex infrastructure programs. You will ensure innovative and safe design of Transport solutions for the successful delivery of these projects on time and on budget. Particular focus will be electrical engineering within Rail traction, substations, distribution, HV cables and OHW and Road projects such as traffic control signals and lighting.

As Director Electrical, you will be expected to:

  • Ensure delivery of safe and innovatively designed Transport solutions that align with governing statutory and legislative requirements, construction and operational requirements across branch programs of work, ensuring projects comply with relevant national/international quality and safety standards and are fit for purpose and appropriately assured.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable frameworks across the Transport portfolio to ensure service reliability throughout the project and asset life-cycle and into operations, including identifying and managing risk associated with the design and delivery of projects and ensure that management plans and processed are effectively and competently implemented and stand up to audit, both internally and externally.
  • Ensure linkages between the other key work streams within technical services are appropriately embedded into the processes and practices of each project driving a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the management of resource levels, contribute to project budget development and determine the allocation of technical managers with the required deployed skills and competencies to projects, as well as engaging and managing the procurement of professional services providers as required.
  • Review feasibility studies for infrastructure proposals across a program of work, ensuring compliance with feasibility assessments, planning, design and business case methodology for infrastructure proposals across a program of work and determining appropriate remedial actions which gain support and approval.
  • Model good leadership to inspire direction and delivery, develop people, and drive change.
  • Motivate, inspire and empower the development of a positive, inclusive and engaged team with a clear focus on the delivery of outcomes and the continued development of capabilities across the team.
  • Act as a thought leader, remaining abreast of current and emerging planning issues and trends, including domestic and international best practice, innovative approaches, and opportunities to support the achievements of the project objectives.

About you

  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with deployed specialist resources, project and branch management teams, and the wider TfNSW community to enhance technical knowledge and inform capability development.
  • Building effective relationships to understand customer needs and requirements to deliver customer focused outcomes across a wide variety of fleet projects and stakeholders.
  • Engaging with multiple stakeholders with competing priorities, resolving conflicts and priorities, in a complex environment, whilst ensuring consistent, value for money and timely delivery of engineering and technical services with consideration of cost efficiencies and timeframes while resolving conflicts and priorities.
  • Record of success at a senior engineering leadership level in a large complex organisation with proven strategic leadership management competency and expertise with the capacity to inspire staff to deliver. Experience within the design and design management of Rail OHW and associated power generation would be highly regarded.
  • Minimum Degree qualification in Electrical engineering.
  • The role is identified as a Rail Safety Worker under the Rail Industry Worker Scheme.
