About The Team

The Train Crewing Capability and Learning team is fully responsible to ensure that they train and deliver highly qualified Train Drivers, Guards and support teams to meet our Sydney Trains and Transport for NSW future growth and digital network milestones. We work in partnership with TfNSW Learning and Development, and together we’re aiming to transform our learning experience to be best in class. We put our people at the centre, and this drives us to ensure we are seeking continuous improvement of our initial employment training, continuation training programs and learning experience.

The opportunity

The Senior Manager Initial Employment Training is responsible for the end-to-end Trainee experience including the leadership of the Initial Employment Training Program, ensuring Trainees are completing training requirements with a high level of competency, leading Trainees to success through personal development and performance support and meeting both business and legislative requirements.

The role is accountable for the ongoing assurance of the Initial Employment Training program and ensuring the program meets current crew operational and performance standards and assists in the identification and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives for the Initial Employment Training program.

Key accountabilities include:
  • Leading an engaging learning experience for our people, ensuring best practice whilst driving employee engagement and uplifting capability
  • Leading Crew Trainee Leads to support personal development and performance, as well as support them with managing Trainees and Trainers including escalations of people matters from the Train Crew and Capability Managers, key recruitment decisions and participation in special review panels.
  • Influencing training outcomes with applicable shared services teams to ensure trainees are onboarded successfully, class sizes are maximised and Trainees are engaged and have a positive training experience.
  • Working closely with Compliance, Investigation and Assurance and Operational Readiness & Improvement leadership to identify potential improvements and efficiencies to be implemented in Initial Employment Training to improve performance outcomes.


About You

We’re looking for someone who’s an inspiring leader with demonstrated experience and proven ability in delivering complex training programs in a highly operational and unionised environment. Your passion for training and the employee experience will be evident, and you strive to deliver world class training solutions to employees whilst uplifting capability and meeting business requirements.

This role will require advanced relationship and communication skills and will suit someone who enjoys partnering with all levels of the business, whether this is our crew depots or colleagues across the Transport NSW cluster. Great presentation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills will also stand you in good stead in this role.

Strong people leadership experience is required, ideally gained in an operational environment, and you’ll enjoy empowering the teams you lead to success, taking them on the change journey with you.

The ideal applicant will have relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent industry-based experience, with proven ability to lead a training program or function. An understanding of regulatory compliance is also highly desirable.
