Downer’s Major Projects team is responsible for originating and delivering of Downer’s large and most complex projects nationwide, with a reputation for effective service delivery and quality to our prominently government/public based customers. This can be seen most recently with our major projects in Sydney and Melbourne through our Sydney Growth Trains (SGT) & High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) projects respectively.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Commercial Analyst – Major Projects to join our team in VIC - Melbourne or Sydney - NSW. This is a full-time permanent opportunity.

The Senior Commercial Analyst will provide support to the Senior Commercial Manager – Major Projects in tenders and project delivery relating to project valuation, financial modelling, value-for-money initiatives, business cases, investment papers, contract reviews, and project accounting. The role includes liaising with internal and external stakeholders for pricing estimates, cost benefits analysis, commercial discussions.


  • Strong financial modelling and analytical skills – ability to build, use, modify and update financial models for large and complex transactions, and to structure cost benefits analysis together with risks and opportunities assessments.
  • Ability to transform large volumes of data into meaningful reports Communication – verbal and written, particularly around key risks and assumptions, and synthesising issues and problems, and articulating strategy and plans.
  • Commercial acumen, including identification of risks and opportunities, interpretation of contracts, and provision of commercial advice on payment mechanism, abatements, insurance, value-for-money, change/variation mechanism and so on.
  • Accounting knowledge desirable, including inter-company transfer, cost control, month end reporting
  • Experience in project finance and corporate finance desirable
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, particularly around key risks and assumptions and articulating strategies and plans
  • Stakeholder management – driving the pricing process with key stakeholders in an affirmative and consultative manner
  • Critical thinking - testing the hypothesis of the cost input data with stream leads, and driving value-for-money outcomes
  • Problem solving – solving complex transaction problems with stream leads from the commercial/financial lens
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce/ Finance/ Accounting, Law, Engineering or associated discipline
